The story follows the lives of the Gibbs and Webb families and their neighbors, presenting an ordinary day in Act 1. Act 2 explores the courtship and marriage of George Gibbs and Emily Webb. In Act 3, Emily's death and funeral serve as a turning point, as she converses with the dead and returns to life briefly, only to find it's not what she expected. The play concludes with the Stage Manager's poignant summary, "This is the way we were: in our growing up and in our marrying and in our living and in our dying."
