A group of graduate students embark on a research expedition to study the impact of global warming on a pod of Belugas in the Bering Sea, aboard the crabbing boat Harbinger. However, their discovery of a thawed Soviet space wreckage unleashes a deadly threat. The Russians had experimented with tardigrades, which had mutated into aggressive organisms that can withstand extreme conditions. As the crew is exposed to these creatures, they must fight for survival against the mutated organisms that are drawn to the warmth of human companionship.
