A cunning young woman disguises herself as a missionary's daughter to secure a passage on a transatlantic voyage to New York.

Captain Sam Whelan, a Caribbean freighter captain, hires Sally Clark, a woman pretending to be a missionary's daughter, to care for an abandoned baby on his ship. As they journey to New York, tensions rise when the ship's mate, Gatson, sexually assaults Sally, prompting the Captain to fight back and ultimately throw Gatson overboard. As their romance blossoms, the investigation into the assault reveals Sally's troubled past, putting their relationship to the test.
