James Lake, a wrongly convicted man, escapes from prison and is picked up by wealthy Leslie Whitlock, who has a plan to murder his wife and make Lake the scapegoat. Whitlock offers Lake $10,000 to kill his wife, but Lake refuses, and is blackmailed into accepting the contract. Whitlock suggests Lake strangle his wife, take the money, and escape to Mexico.
