The American Civil War is underway in 1861, and the Union forces are preparing to leave Gosport, Virginia. Before departing, they destroy port facilities, docks, and warehouses, but fail to destroy the dry dock. The Confederates repair the U.S.S. Merrimack, a steam frigate, and transform it into the ironclad C.S.S. Virginia. Washington sends spies to Virginia to steal the Confederate ironclad's specs, while the Union starts building its own ironclad, the U.S.S. Monitor. The Confederate ironclad wreaks havoc on Union warships, and after three months, the Union ironclad is ready to face off against it. The two ironclads engage in a fierce battle on March 9th, 1862, in the shallow waters of coastal Virginia.
