Ernie Burroughs, a young comedian, joins a youth theatre group to appease his dad's insistence that he get a job or go to college. He's thrilled to be cast as the lead in the group's upcoming production, but the play's theme of a school shooting and his role as the shooter makes him uncomfortable. Despite his reservations, Ernie stays in the play, determined to turn it into a comedy. As rehearsals progress, the play begins to take over his life, causing him to grow suspicious of the world around him and believe that something sinister is manipulating him towards a violent end.
