In the small, all-black community of Junction 88, Lolly Simpkins, a beautiful young woman, falls for gentle songwriter Buster Jenkins, who struggles to make ends meet and is unable to marry. Her father favors a rival suitor, Onnie, who is crude but has a better income. Buster's chance at success arrives when impresario Bob Howard, who has received his songs, comes to town searching for him. However, Bob is seeking a pseudonym, "Hewlett Green," that nobody has ever heard of. Buster must decide whether to reveal his true identity. Against this backdrop, a lively jazz concert takes place at the local church.
