Franta Louka, a charming concert cellist, is forced to play at funerals and paint tombstones after being replaced in the state orchestra. To settle his debt, he agrees to a dubious plan to marry a Russian woman, only to have her abandon him and emigrate to West Germany, leaving her young son Kolya to live with Louka.
