Pop Kellogg, a prospector, is killed by McBeau and Dawson, who want the map to his secret oil claim. His grandson Billy, now an orphan, is escorted to Fort McKenzie by Corporal Rod Webb and his dog Chinook. Webb turns Billy over to Anne DuMere, who runs the trading post for Dan Morgan.
