John Sims, a man with big ideas but little follow-through, faces unemployment, financial struggles, and the threat of homelessness with his wife Mary. When his uncle offers them a 160-acre farm, they must learn to farm and navigate rural life. With the help of a transient Swede couple, Chris and Hilda, John discovers the value of community and comes up with a plan to form a cooperative, where members barter and share resources. As the cooperative grows, John becomes the leader, but he must navigate challenges, including self-serving individuals and the unpredictable nature of farming.
