The film tells the true story of Billy Haines, a Hollywood star who defied convention by refusing to hide his relationship with his male partner, Jimmie Shields, in the 1930s. When his studio head, Louis B. Mayer, demanded he end the relationship, Haines instead chose to start a new career as an interior decorator, and he and Shields went on to live together for over 50 years.
