Johnny Murdock's father, Mark Brandon, is killed by road agents, and Johnny discovers a secret inheritance of a rich claim. As he navigates the treacherous gold rush landscape, he uncovers a web of deceit and murder, including the killing of prospector Cramer and mining engineer Carter Morgan. Along the way, Johnny forms an alliance with old friend Dusty Hanover and helps Mary Cramer, widow of the murdered prospector, escape danger. Ultimately, Johnny and Mary find happiness together, with the gold strike under a peculiarly-shaped rock, and Morgan is brought to justice.
