Playhouse 90 background

Playhouse 90

A pivotal and haunting moment in American history, the 1864 Sand Creek massacre saw the U.S. Army brutally slaughter Cheyenne and Arapaho civilians, leaving a lasting scar on the nation's conscience.

The film tells the story of the brutal and unjust actions of U.S. Cavalry Col. John Templeton, who seeks to forcibly relocate the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes from their fertile lands in Colorado to a barren area called Sand Creek. Despite warnings from the Indian Agent, Col. Templeton moves against the tribes, using the theft of horses and the killing of a sentry as a pretext to launch a violent attack on the unsuspecting Native Americans. The film explores themes of racism, imperialism, and the devastating consequences of colonialism.
