A lone drifter travels through the harsh North Dakota winter, towing a trailer containing his possessions and accompanied only by self-help cassette tapes. He comes across a broken down truck and its dying driver, Nathaniel Shoemaker, whom he saves. As Nathaniel lies unconscious, the drifter learns about his plans to pick up his pen-pal girlfriend from prison, who has given him the nickname NoDak. The drifter becomes convinced he's more deserving of the girl and decides to take NoDak's place, driven by the self-help tapes.
