In 1897, Queen Victoria's relationship with Indian servant Abdul Karim sparked controversy within the royal family and court. He, a former waiter, won her favor by showcasing Indian cuisine and teaching her Hindi, earning her affectionate letters and lavish gifts. However, the royal family was shocked by a Muslim's presence at court and threatened to have Victoria declared insane if she knighted him. Victoria ultimately relented, and after her death in 1901, Karim was banished from royal circles and returned to India, where he later passed away.
