A young Japanese actress recalls her tumultuous childhood in Korea during wartime. Her father departs to fight, her baby sister Miko succumbs to typhoid, and her beloved Korean maid Ohana is fired due to a mistake that puts Chiko's life at risk. As she grows up, Chiko becomes aware of Japan's occupation and the persecution of Koreans. After the war, the tables turn, and Chiko's family is shunned. The Russians arrive, and they must destroy all evidence, including Miko's picture. But when the Russians come to their doorstep, they decide to flee across the 38th Parallel in search of freedom, guided by the Northern Star. Along the way, they encounter a Korean man who agrees to help them evade Russian soldiers despite his family's tragic fate at the hands of the Japanese.
