A young outlaw, Jess Burns, escapes the Sheriff by boarding a train, only to find himself in the company of a charming con artist, Chuck Morse, who poses as a mechanic. Chuck convinces Jess to become his driver for an upcoming race, renaming him Speed. Despite being a novice driver and initially hesitant, Jess develops a rivalry with his competitor and sets out to win the race.
