In 15th century Florence, a young charlatan named Tito gains the respect of a blind scholar and his daughter Romola, despite his lack of academic credentials. Tito's carefree lifestyle is marked by a flirtation with a peasant girl and a mock marriage that she takes seriously. Romola, however, marries Tito due to her father's wishes, rather than love. As the Medici family loses power, Tito joins the new government and becomes chief magistrate, but his cruel actions earn him the hatred of Romola and the people, ultimately leading to his downfall. In the end, Romola finds love with a devoted sculptor named Carlo.
