Charlie Taylor, a songwriter, is released from jail after a year for a crime he denies committing. His girlfriend Randi gets him a job through her ex-boyfriend Carl, a district attorney. Charlie becomes involved in a fake kidnapping plot orchestrated by Emma, the wife of a wealthy and ill man, to get his step-daughter Melissa to leave her parents.
