In the comedy film, Charlie finds himself in an awkward boot camp before being sent to France. Feeling homesick, he receives a mysterious package containing limburger cheese, which he uses to his advantage by tossing it over into the German trench. Charlie then goes "over the top" and captures 13 German soldiers, claiming he "surrounded them." He then takes on an unusual mission, volunteering to sneak through the German lines disguised as a tree trunk. With the help of a French girl, he manages to capture the Kaiser and the Crown Prince. Charlie's heroic deeds earn him a grand welcome in New York, complete with a statue and victory parade. However, it's later revealed that his entire adventure was just a dream, and he's actually just woken up by his fellow soldiers.
