In a throne room, Cassiopeia insults Poseidon's sea nymphs, Nereids, but one nymph secretly reports her words to Poseidon. Enraged, Poseidon sends his sea serpent, Cetus, to destroy Ethiopia. King Cepheus's kingdom is devastated, and he seeks a way to save it by sacrificing his daughter, Andromeda, to the serpent. As Andromeda writes her last letter to her love, Perseus, she is knocked out and chained to a rock, where she awaits her fate.
