In the drought-stricken town of Sundown, ranchers are forced to sell their cattle at a loss to pay off mortgages held by banker Cylus Cuttler. However, when a hoof-and-mouth disease outbreak occurs, Sheriff Tex Rockett quarantines all cattle on local ranches, causing tensions to rise. Steve Davis defies the quarantine, leading to his arrest, and the ranchers storm the jail to free him. With the help of Nick Cuttler, Steve breaks out of jail and is instructed to kill Tex to aid the ranchers. Meanwhile, government agent Bret Stockton and Tex uncover a sinister plot by the Cuttlers to use acid to make it seem like the disease is spreading, further complicating the situation.
