Young Henry VI ascends to the throne under the protection of the Duke of Gloucester after his father's early death and loss of possessions in France. Unaware of rival claimants, he tries to unite the warring factions in the Hundred Years' War, capturing Joan of Arc, and marries Margaret of Anjou to unite England and France. However, the marriage is plagued by Margaret's affair with Somerset and her rivalry with Eleanor, Gloucester's wife, leading to civil war and Henry's inability to prevent Gloucester's death.
