Wealthy Fisher Willow, having completed her education at the Sorbonne, reluctantly returns to her plantation home in rural Tennessee to attend high-society balls and debut in Memphis. Due to her unconventional behavior and her father's controversial decision to blow up a levee, Fisher is considered an outsider. She hires Jimmy Dobyne, a young man from a respectable family, as her escort.
