Colley Dawson, a skilled lock expert, turns to a life of crime after meeting Benny Carfield, an unscrupulous antique dealer. Dawson steals valuable goods, which Carfield sells, and the profits fund his double life with actress Vi. After being caught and sentenced to ten years in prison, Dawson is released early in 1940 to work for the War Office, using his skills to crack a safe in a German-occupied Belgian château, allowing the British to photograph lists of German agents without detection.
