Captain "Wolf" Larsen, a philosophical and ruthless leader, commands a seal schooner with an iron fist. After a ferry accident, literary critic Van Weyden and novelist Maud Brewster find themselves washed overboard and rescued by Larsen's crew. Maud, disguised as a boy, is initially mistaken for a boy and falls under the cook's suspicions, but Larsen takes her under his protection and proposes marriage. However, the crew mutinies, and Larsen is struck blind as he confronts the rebels. The ship is set ablaze, and while Humphrey and Maud are rescued by another steamer, Larsen refuses to leave his ship, ultimately perishing in the flames.
