During World War II, German-born actors changed their names to avoid being typecast as Nazis. In the Columbia serial "The Secret Code", Police Lieutenant Dan Barton is tasked with taking down an Axis sabotage ring. He feigns being thrown off the force and pretends to steal a secret formula for synthetic rubber. Disguising himself as the Black Commando, he fights the saboteurs, who are also after the formula. With the help of a reporter and his police partner, Barton thwarts the sabotage ring and destroys the secret code, making him a hunted fugitive.
