The Stork Derby background

The Stork Derby

In the midst of the Great Depression, a Canadian lawyer's peculiar will sets off a frenzy among Toronto women, who eagerly compete to have the most children within a specific timeframe in order to claim a life-altering inheritance.

The Great Toronto Stork Derby, a sensational media frenzy that unfolded in the 1920s, revolved around a millionaire's bequest to the woman who would have the most babies in ten years. Three front-runners emerged: Vivianne Kennelly, a devoted mother with a perceived connection to the deceased; Colleen Brant, a mother of eleven with a desire for independence; and Gina Bonaggio, an unemployed immigrant mother seeking a better life. As the media frenzy intensified, reporter Kate Harrington became embroiled in the story, compromising her values to stay ahead of the competition. The court case that ensued was marked by legal manipulation, racism, and prejudice, ultimately awarding the prize to four Anglo-Saxon Protestant mothers, leaving the original three families devastated and disillusioned.
