Robert Ross lives a sheltered life in a Toronto suburb, sharing his thoughts only with his mentally disabled sister Rowena. He feels for his weak father and avoids his bitter mother. Rowena's death prompts Robert to confront his family and take control. Enlisting in the Canadian army in 1914, he finds himself in England and France, using the war to resolve his inner conflicts.
