The White Maze: There Is Always a Way background

The White Maze: There Is Always a Way

Two skiers, Matthias "Hauni" Haunholder and Matthias Mayr, achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first humans to ski down Gora Pobeda, the highest peak in Eastern Siberia.

The mountain Gora Pobeda is notorious for its remote location, with the nearest village and road access over 350km away, and the nearest hospital and helicopter 1300km away in Yakutsk. The extreme continental climate is characterized by extremely cold winters, with temperatures often dropping below -60°C, and short hot summers. This results in a very small time window for climbing and descending the mountain, making it unclear when it would be possible to do so. Without helicopter support, reaching the mountain without equipment seems impossible.
