The film presents a psychiatrist's in-depth analysis of the youth generation through five distinct case studies, highlighting the profound differences between the counterculture movement and the traditional values of their parents, while also drawing from her own personal encounters.

Dr. Virginia Grant, a psychiatrist, is writing a book about her recent cases involving the reckless and idealistic youth of the 1960s. The story follows several troubled teenagers and young adults, including Andrea, who discovers her mother's infidelity and develops an incestuous desire for her father. Other characters include sisters Felicia and Ella, who become addicted to drugs, and Annabelle, who becomes involved with a pimp. The story also explores the relationships between Tim, an older man with a young mistress, and Dr. Grant's own daughter Diane, who becomes involved with a political radical named Hal.
