In August 1914, Austrian star Elsa Duranyi and English matinee idol Alan Barclay plan to marry, but the War intervenes and Elsa disappears. Alan joins British Intelligence, adopting the identity of a shell-shocked German prisoner named Hans Teller. He's sent to Germany to locate the German "Big Bertha," a long-range gun bombarding Paris. With the help of another British agent, Carl Schrottle, they successfully destroy the gun. Meanwhile, Elsa, now a spy for the Fatherland, is tasked with finding the British spy organization and its members. She encounters Hans Teller, unaware that it's actually Alan, and agrees to flee to Holland with him, but her superior officer, Ludwig, is hot on their heels.
