In the 1980s, a young man from a poor family leaves his rural home to pursue a teaching career in Seoul, but his plans are derailed when his money is stolen and his luggage goes missing. He eventually finds himself in a small town where he is hired as a teacher, and develops feelings for a mysterious woman whose past is shrouded in secrecy. As he gets to know the townspeople, he discovers that they have been secretly communicating with a neighboring town in North Korea through an underground tunnel.
