Manuel Puig, a famous gay author, fled Argentina after persecution and found solace in Rio de Janeiro, where he could openly express his sexuality. Despite Brazil being under a military dictatorship, Puig, as a foreigner, was not considered a threat. He found liberation in the city's beaches, discos, and casual sexual encounters.
