In a small Belorussian town, summer 1942, the German occupation has brought a semblance of normalcy. The authorities study Russian, socialize with local girls, and are catered to by the women. However, when the teenage son of a local woman joins the partisans and blows up a German train, the Germans must execute him as a warning to others. The commandant, who is romantically involved with the boy's mother, is torn between his duty to obey orders and his personal connection to the family.
