Born into a Russian-German aristocratic family in Ukraine, Blavatsky traveled extensively around the Russian Empire as a child. She developed an interest in Western esotericism during her teenage years, largely self-educated. She claimed to have encountered a group of spiritual adepts, the "Masters of the Ancient Wisdom", during her travels, who trained her in Tibet to develop her psychic powers.
