Brian O'Connal, a typical adolescent boy, navigates small-town Saskatchewan during the Depression era. He's often at odds with schoolteacher Miss MacDonald and spends his free time trying to catch gophers with friends Artie and Forbsie. Brian's best friend and protector is Jonathan Ben, who's respected despite his family's reputation due to his father's association with the town drunk. When Brian's parents leave town, he stays with his uncle and experiences a series of events that broaden his perspective and help him see life in a new light.
