In the Catskills of 1964, a young Russian Jewish boy named Zelimo faces a miserable summer at a boys' camp, where he's bullied and struggles to fit in. When his mother takes a job at a neighboring girls' camp, Zelimo joins her and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, reflecting on his difficult childhood in Central Russia and his harrowing escape in 1959. Along the way, he finds guidance and support from Hector, a charismatic camp counselor who becomes a mentor and friend.
