Alice Hyatt, a 35-year-old homemaker and mother, is devastated when her husband is killed in an accident. She decides to move to her hometown in Monterey, California, with her 11-year-old son Tommy, to start a new life. Along the way, Alice tries to earn money by singing and taking on various jobs, including waitressing at Mel and Ruby's Diner in Tucson, Arizona. Her relationships with the people she meets, including a younger man and a farmer, help her gain a new perspective on her life and her past choices.
