Susan Warfield, a newcomer to Los Angeles, befriends Nicole, who's struggling with a stomach ulcer and lacks private medical insurance. When doctors refuse to operate due to Nicole's insurance status, Susan concocts a plan: Nicole will borrow her medical card, pretend to be Susan, and undergo surgery while Susan takes a vacation, pretending to be Nicole. However, Nicole's charade ends in tragedy when she mysteriously dies after the operation, leaving Susan Warfield presumed dead by the government.
