Opal, a lonely girl, discovers a stray dog at Winn-Dixie, a local supermarket, after a chaotic scene unfolds. She names him Winn-Dixie and convinces her father to let her keep him. As the summer progresses, Opal forms strong bonds with her new friends, including the elderly and children from her father's church. However, she learns a valuable lesson when Winn-Dixie almost gets swept away in a thunderstorm, teaching her that some relationships are meant to be free and cannot be held onto.
