In this historical drama, a Polish countess, Napoleon's mistress, employs her powerful position to further Poland's quest for independence, leveraging her influence over the French leader to shape the fate of her homeland.

Countess Marie Walewska meets Napoleon Bonaparte at a ball in Warsaw, where he attempts to seduce her despite her being married to a man three times her age. After ignoring his advances, she agrees to meet him again, and they eventually start a relationship. However, Napoleon's plans for a political marriage with Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria lead him to divorce Empress Josephine and leave Marie pregnant and heartbroken.
