Decorated leader Rolf Steiner is promoted to Sergeant in 1943 on the Russian front, just as upper-class Captain Hauptmann Stransky takes command of his squad. Despite his bravery, Steiner is faced with a new challenge when Stransky, driven by personal ambition and arrogance, claims to have led their squad in a battle against Russian troops and demands the Iron Cross. When Stransky's requests are denied, he orders Steiner's squad to stay behind, leaving them surrounded by the enemy and forced to fight for survival.
