In 1865, a former Confederate Captain and his daughter travel through Nevada, but their journey is threatened when they stop at a way-station where a group of Union soldiers are stationed. Tensions rise as the daughter of one of the soldiers, who lost her fiancé in the war, demands the Union patrol arrest the former Confederate officer. Unbeknownst to them, Modoc Indians have set up an ambush nearby, putting the Union patrol and the way-station in danger. The former Confederate officer, fearing for the lives of the Union soldiers, decides to wait until sunrise to warn them of the danger, in a surprising act of heroism.
