I Am a Camera background

I Am a Camera

In 1920s Berlin, a writer becomes enamored with a captivating cabaret singer whose talents transcend her captivating voice.

Christopher Isherwood's early 1930s experience in Berlin is dramatized, showcasing his struggles to write his first novel while living in poverty. He reflects on this time due to a present-day event, with memories centering on his platonic friendship with Sally Bowles, a young and irreverent British woman. Sally, also struggling financially, was in Berlin to pursue an acting career, often finding ways to use others to her advantage. The group also included Natalia Landauer, a traditional and aware department store heiress who was Chris' only English student; Fritz Wendel, who was secretly hiding something and initially pursued Sally before meeting Natalia; and Clive Mortimer, an independently wealthy American who lived for having fun and spending money without commitments.
