A young woman is murdered, and her lover Edward Clary is wrongly executed for the crime. The DA, Victor Scott, learns of the mistake too late and is consumed by guilt, eventually becoming a defense lawyer and getting entangled with a mob kingpin. When his former colleague Ellen is accused of murder, Victor must decide whether to use his new connections to clear her name, despite it putting him at odds with the mob.
