In a secretive polygamist community, Judith Leavitt, a junior wife of community leader Bishop Josiah Leavitt, tries to protect her 12-year-old daughter from the community's strict rules. When Josiah banishes her and her children, Judith decides to leave the community and start anew. With the help of social services and kind strangers, they adapt to life outside. However, Judith's decision may have unintended consequences, including her daughter's desire to marry a younger man and the community's desire to punish Judith for her defiance.
