In 1940, a New York news correspondent and his wife flee Western Europe, seeking a safer haven in London to start a family. However, the war takes a toll on their relationship as they cope with the trauma around them. After a tragic event, they decide to return to Connecticut, but John remains in London to write one final story. He finds solace at Riswick Children's House, a haven for displaced children, including two children who have faced trauma.
