In 1940, a New York news correspondent and his wife flee Western Europe, seeking a safer haven in London to start a family. However, the war takes a toll on their relationship as they cope with the trauma around them. After a tragic event, they decide to return to Connecticut, but John remains in London to write one final story. He finds solace at Riswick Children's House, a haven for displaced children, including two children who have faced trauma. As John forms bonds with Margaret and Peter, he must confront the hardest decision of his life, all while facing the constant threat of enemy bombs in London.
