At a maternity hospital, expectant fathers await the arrival of their babies, while the wives-to-be pace the corridors with varying emotions. Nurse Bowers efficiently manages the ward, where a new patient, Grace Sutton, is transferred from prison after being convicted of murder. Despite her crime, the hospital staff sympathizes with her husband Jed, who is allowed unlimited time with his wife. The expectant mothers on the ward have different views on motherhood, with some embracing the role and others dreading it. Meanwhile, a woman who desperately wants a baby wanders in from another ward, and a grieving Italian mother learns that her newborn has passed away. As the story unfolds, the women's opinions on motherhood evolve, and the expectant fathers are faced with difficult choices when tragedy strikes.
