Lousy Little Sixpence background

Lousy Little Sixpence

The film explores the traumatic phenomenon of forcibly removing Aboriginal children from their families to work as domestic servants for white families, simultaneously highlighting the emergence of Aboriginal organizations in the 1930s, with a focus on the Aborigines Progressive Association.

In 1909, the New South Wales Aborigines Protection Board attempted to dismantle Aboriginal communities by forcibly removing children and assigning them as servants to white employers. Despite receiving a meager sixpence in payment, many children never saw their earnings. Decades later, Aboriginal people rallied together to challenge the Aborigines Protection Board, and their story is told through a combination of archival footage, photographs, and the recollections of respected Aboriginal elders.
